After years of waiting, Trezor launched their new hardware wallet at the end of 2023: the Trezor Safe 3. The main improvement over previous models, the Trezor One and Trezor T, is the addition of a Secure Element (security chip). We have extensively tested the Trezor Safe 3, and on this page, we share its advantages and disadvantages, so you can decide if this wallet is right for you.

Advantages of the Trezor Safe 3
- 100% open-source software: Trezor's software is completely open-source, which means the community can review the code for integrity and security.
- Secure Element (security chip CC EAL 6+): The Trezor Safe 3 is equipped with a security chip, providing extra protection for your private keys. This was a significant upgrade compared to the Trezor One and Trezor T, which did not have this chip.
- Security seal: The Trezor Safe 3 comes in a box with a cardboard tear strip, so you can immediately see if the packaging has been opened. Additionally, there is an extra security seal over the USB port of the wallet itself for added security.
- Bitcoin-only firmware option: The Trezor Safe 3 offers the option to install Bitcoin-only firmware, ideal for Bitcoin maximalists who want to avoid the risks of unnecessary code.
- Affordable: The Trezor Safe 3 has an attractive price of only €89, including shipping, making it one of the most affordable hardware wallets available.
- Choice of multiple colors: The Trezor Safe 3 is available in four different colors (on the back of the wallet). This makes it easy to distinguish between multiple wallets, especially if you use them for different purposes.
Disadvantages of the Trezor Safe 3
- No iOS (iPhone) support: The Trezor Safe 3 does not work with iPhones. Although there is an app for iOS, it only allows you to view your wallets and not perform transactions.
- No Bluetooth / only cable connection: The Trezor Safe 3 only works via a cable connection. Even if you want to use the wallet with an Android phone, you must connect the Safe 3 with a cable.
- Limited support for new networks: The Trezor Safe 3 primarily supports Ethereum and Solana tokens and lacks support for some newer networks. Other wallets, such as Ledger, do offer support for a broader range of networks.
Good to Know
- USB-C to USB-C cable: The Trezor Safe 3 comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable. If you want to use the wallet with a PC that only has a USB-A port, you will need to provide your own USB-C to USB-A cable. You may already have this cable, but it's good to keep in mind. The wallet itself has a USB-C port.
Who is the Trezor Safe 3 suitable for?
The Trezor Safe 3 is ideal for users who:
- Use a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer or an Android phone.
- Want to use the wallet monthly and are looking for an affordable solution for their crypto storage.
If you plan to use your wallet more intensively, such as daily, we recommend the Trezor Safe 5. This wallet has the same functionality as the Trezor Safe 3 but is equipped with a larger screen and a touchscreen, which enhances ease of use. The Safe 5 is more expensive but pays off in user-friendliness.
