Are you looking for a seed phrase backup (The SOLIDHODL comes out best in the test) to go with your hardware or software wallet? On this page, we explain the basics and show you our range of seed backups so you can pick one right away.
Seed phrase, recovery seed, recovery words, mnemonic phrase and crypto words
You may have come across any of the terms mentioned in the title in your search for a seed phrase backup. At their core, all these terms mean exactly the same thing. They are your 12 to 24 words that your hardware or software wallet generates. The words represent a cryptographic key that is on your wallet in readable form. With these words, you can always recover your wallet and access your crypto coins. We will tell you what the bip39 glossary is in the next section.
Bip39 glossary
You may have already come across the term bip39. Other variants are 'bip39 words list' or 'bip39 word list'. Bip39 refers to a list of 2048 words. For each of these words, the first four letters are unique. Or in other words, in the case of the word 'abstract', there is no other word on the list that starts with 'abst...'.
When setting up your hardware or software wallet, it generates 12 to 24 words based on the bip39 word list. It is of real importance that you not only write this on a piece of paper with a pen but also record it in a good metal seed backup (SOLIDHODL is the best at the moment). This way, you can secure access to your crypto.
Hardware and software wallets seed phrase backups
Both software and hardware wallets create a seed phrase. Examples of software wallets are Metamask or the Binance Chain wallet. Examples of hardware wallets are the Ledger Nano S, Nano X or CoolWallet Pro. If you have crypto stored on an exchange or with another third party that does the storage for you, you will not get a seed phrase. They then manage the seed phrase for you.
