With the announcement of the Trezor Safe 3 at the end of 2023, it quickly became clear that Trezor would launch a new model with a touchscreen. This turned out to be the Trezor Safe 5, released in 2024. The key improvement over previous models, the Trezor One and Trezor T, is the addition of a Secure Element (security chip). The Trezor Safe 3 is more of a successor to the Trezor One, while the touchscreen-enabled Trezor Safe 5 can be seen as the follow-up to the Trezor T.
Here you’ll find an overview of all the advantages and disadvantages of the Trezor Safe 5, based on our extensive testing.

Advantages of the Trezor Safe 5
- Touchscreen for intuitive operation: The Trezor Safe 5 features a color touchscreen that significantly improves the user experience compared to the Safe 3. The device gives a slight vibration with certain actions, similar to smartphone feedback, enhancing the overall experience.
- Fully open-source software: The Trezor software is 100% open-source, meaning the community can inspect and validate the code for optimal security and transparency.
- Secure Element chip (CC EAL 6+): The Trezor Safe 5 includes an advanced security chip, which was not available in the Trezor One and Trezor T models. This chip significantly enhances security.
- Security seal: The Safe 5 has a security seal over the USB-C port, providing extra protection against unauthorized access.
- Bitcoin-only firmware option: For users who focus solely on Bitcoin, the Trezor Safe 5 offers the option to install Bitcoin-only firmware, increasing security and efficiency for Bitcoin users.
- Available in three colors: The Trezor Safe 5 comes in three variants: Black Graphite, Green Beryl, and Violet Ore, each with a unique back color.
Disadvantages of the Trezor Safe 5
- No iOS support: Like other Trezor wallets, the Safe 5 does not work with iPhones. For iOS users who want to transact with a hardware wallet, a Ledger model (except for the Ledger Nano S Plus) may be more suitable.
- No Bluetooth functionality, cable-only: The Trezor Safe 5 only works with a cable connection and cannot be charged wirelessly.
- Limited support for new networks: While the Safe 5 supports many popular altcoins and tokens, Trezor mainly focuses on Ethereum and Solana networks. For broader network support, other hardware wallets, such as Ledger, may be a better option.
Useful Information
- USB-C to USB-C cable included: The Safe 5 comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable. If you need a USB-C to USB-A cable for older PC ports, you’ll need to purchase it separately.
Who is the Trezor Safe 5 suitable for?
We recommend the Trezor Safe 5 for users who:
- Work with Windows, Linux, or macOS computers or have an Android phone
- Plan to use the wallet regularly, such as daily or weekly
For users who need their wallet less frequently, the Trezor Safe 3 can be an affordable option. The Safe 3 has a smaller, non-color screen and works with two buttons. It may be slightly less user-friendly, but it’s perfectly suitable for occasional use.
