Setting your Ledger Nano S

Step 1: Making a connection

Connect the Ledger Nano S to your computer with the supplied USB cable. The Ledger will now start up. In the screen it says: "Welcome to Ledger Nano S". Press the right button to continue.

Now we will explain in English how to control the device. The device has two buttons. Use the right button to continue to the next step, the left button to go back. Press both buttons if you want to select an option.

Read through the texts and click each time on the right button to continue until you get to 'Set up as new device'. Press and hold both buttons to select this option.

Step 2: Selecting a PIN code

First of all, you have to choose a PIN code. The Ledger now asks "Choose a PIN". Press both buttons. You can choose a PIN between 4 and 8 digits.

You will need this code in the future to access the device. With the left and right button you can determine the first digit of your pincode. Press both buttons to select the digit and choose the next digit.

Once you have selected your complete PIN code, navigate to the ✓ icon and press both buttons again. Then confirm your PIN again.

Step 3: The Recovery Phrase

The screen now reads: "Write Down Your Recovery Phrase".

Your recovery phrase is a recovery phrase. This phrase ensures that you will always have access to the contents of your wallet even if it is broken or stolen. So keep this sentence safe.

The sentence consists of 24 randomly selected words which are displayed one by one on the screen. You can write these down on the Recovery sheet provided. Take this sheet and a pen and press both buttons at the same time to continue.

Step 4: Recovery Phrase Writing up

Transfer the first word (Word #1) to position 1 on your Recovery sheet.

Press the right button to go to the second word (Word #2). Copy this word to position 2. Repeat this process until the 24th word (Word #24).

It now reads: "Confirm you recovery phrase". Press both buttons again. The Ledger will now ask you to verify your sentence by requesting a word with a certain number. View your recovery sheet and select the word that corresponds to the requested number.

Repeat this process until "Your device is now ready" appears on your device. Your device is now initialised and ready to use. Would you like help buying your first coins? Then click on continue.

How to use Ledger Live

Step 1: Download Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live via this link. Press the button 'Download Now'. When the file is downloaded you can open it and install the program by going through the steps.

Step 2: Security Check

Press the 'Get started' button. Because the device has just been initialized, choose the option 'Use an initialized device'. Then choose the 'Ledger Nano S'.

Now you have to go through a security checklist. Fill in 'Yes' at the first two questions to confirm that you have created your pincode and recovery seed yourself.

Next, do the genuine check. In order to perform this check, you must confirm this on your Ledger by pressing the check mark. The check may take a while. When it is finished you can proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Password

Now you have the possibility to come up with a password. The password prevents anyone on your computer from viewing your details such as your transaction history and public addresses.

Fill in the password twice and press 'Continue'.

Step 4: Firmware Update

You may not have the latest firmware on your device. If this is the case, a new version is available under the heading 'Manager' on the right, with a blue 'Update' button next to it. Press this button to install the new firmware. If there is nothing there, you have the latest firmware and you can skip this step.

In the pop-up screen you first press 'Continue', then you have to verify your device by clicking on the right button of your Ledger and entering your pin code.

Now remove the USB cable from your Ledger, keep the left button of your device pressed and reconnect the cable to the Ledger until you see 'Processing' on the screen.

When the update is finished all you have to do is press 'Close'.

Step 5: Installing Apps

If you want to put a coin on your Ledger you have to install the corresponding app. Search for the right coin and press the 'Install' button and the app will be installed automatically. Press 'Close' when the process is over.

Step 6: Creating an Account

In the menu on the left, go to 'Accounts' and press the plus sign. Select the crypto you want to put on your wallet and click 'Continue'. Navigate on your device to the corresponding app and press 'Continue' again.

Ledger Live is now synchronising. This may take a while. Under the heading 'Add New Account' you will see that you can give your new account a name. Select the check mark and click 'Add account'. Your account has now been added.

Step 7: Retrieve recipient address

We use Bitcoin as an example for this step. If you want to send Bitcoins from an exchange or another wallet to your Ledger, you need an address to send them to. This is called a receiving address and can be created in Ledger Live.

In the left menu, go to Receive. Select an account in the first step. In the second step, wait until Ledger Live connects to your Ledger and press 'Continue'. In the third step, press 'Verify'. Now you will see a QR code with your receiver address below it. You can copy this code by pressing 'COPY'.

Send your Bitcoin to this address to keep it safe on your Ledger.
