Founded in 2018, SafePal quickly gained attention after Binance Labs invested in the company. Since May 2019, the SafePal S1 hardware wallet has been available. The original S1 has now been updated with a USB-C port, and SafePal has also launched the S1 Pro. The S1 Pro closely resembles the original version in design but features an aluminum casing, hardened steel, and an upgraded battery. Both models operate in exactly the same way.

Benefits of the SafePal S1 (Pro)
- Air-gapped operation: The SafePal S1 operates solely air-gapped, without cable or Bluetooth connections. SafePal was one of the first to offer an air-gapped wallet, which is generally considered safer since there is no direct connection to any device.
- Supports Bitcoin and many altcoins: The SafePal S1 not only supports Bitcoin but also many other popular cryptocurrencies. Supported networks include Polygon, Solana, Binance Chain (BEP-20), Arbitrum, Base, and Ethereum. The only well-known coins it does not support are Cardano and Kaspa.
- Security seal: The packaging for the SafePal S1 includes a security seal, allowing you to check if the box has been previously opened.
- User-friendly D-pad control: The S1 is equipped with a D-pad with five buttons ("up," "down," "left," "right," and "ok"). This makes navigation easier compared to many other hardware wallets that only have two buttons.
- Affordable price: Priced around €74.95, the S1 is one of the most affordable air-gapped wallets currently available.
Drawbacks of the SafePal S1 (Pro)
- Not open-source: The code for the SafePal S1 is closed, which may be a drawback for some crypto users. However, SafePal has announced that their latest wallet, the SafePal X1, will be open-source, and they are considering making the S1 open-source as well.
- Limited compatibility with desktops without a camera: Since the SafePal S1 operates air-gapped, a camera is required on the device you use with the wallet (such as a PC or mobile device). Not all desktops have a camera, though most laptops do.
Important Information
- Air-gapped operation only: The SafePal S1 can only be used in air-gapped mode; connection via cable or Bluetooth is not possible.
Who is the SafePal S1 (Pro) Suitable For?
The SafePal S1 is ideal for users who:
- Want an air-gapped wallet for added security
- Want to manage multiple altcoins in addition to Bitcoin
- Use an iOS or Android phone
If you have a larger budget, consider the Keystone 3 Pro or OneKey Pro as well.
The SafePal S1 is also compatible with Windows or macOS laptops with a camera, though it is less practical than using it with a mobile device.
