Getting started with your hardware wallet
Just got a hardware wallet? Choose your model below. You'll see how to check that the device is genuine, where to find the official software, how to go through the setup and how to keep your recovery phrase, PIN and firmware in order.
Your recovery phrase is for you aloneBTC Direct, BTC Direct Shop and the manufacturer of your wallet will never ask for it: not by email, not on the phone and not in a chat. Never type it into a website or app that asks for it, either.
Only get software from the sourceFor each model we name the brand's official download page, such as ledger.com/start or trezor.io/start. Don't click on search results or ads: fake versions that steal your recovery phrase turn up there.

Ledger Flex
1Check authenticity
Check that your Ledger Flex is genuine
- Only order from Ledger itself or from an authorised reseller.
- Check that everything is in the box (see the overview below).
- The Recovery Sheets should not have any words on them yet.
- The first time you switch it on, you see a welcome screen. You set a new PIN yourself; you are not asked for an existing code.
- Let the Ledger Wallet app run the Genuine Check. This happens during setup and can be repeated later under My Ledger, where 'Your device is genuine' should then appear.
- Seal
- Yes: most Flex boxes have an anti-tamper seal. Plastic film around the box is not part of it.
- What's in the box
- Ledger Flex, USB-C to USB-C cable, three Recovery Sheets, Ledger Recovery Key and a user guide
- Hardware check

- Desktop

- A 24-word recovery phrase that you write down on the Recovery Sheet. You can also use the included Ledger Recovery Key (an NFC card with its own PIN) or take out the optional Ledger Recover subscription.

- Passphrase
- Supported, up to 100 characters. You set it on the device, either for temporary use or linked to a second PIN.

Keystone
Keystone 3 Pro
1Check authenticity
Check that your Keystone 3 Pro is genuine
- On your computer, open keyst.one/authentication (Device Verification) and choose 'Scan QR Code'.
- Point the Keystone's camera at the QR code on that page.
- Type the verification code shown on the Keystone into the website; you'll see the result straight away.
- Does the check fail? Then don't use the Keystone, don't enter a recovery phrase and email [email protected]. Ideally, do this check right after receiving it, before you use the wallet.
- Seal
- You test authenticity with Device Verification; the device also has an anti-tamper mechanism
- What's in the box
- Keystone 3 Pro, USB-C to USB-C cable, user guide, six seed phrase sheets and jelly tape (no microSD card included)
2Setup
- Software
- Keystone Nexus for iOS and Android
- Phone or computer required?
- Not for setup, which you do entirely on the Keystone. For balances and transactions you use a software wallet on a phone or computer, and for Device Verification and updates you need a computer.
- Mobile
- iOS 16.6 or later and Android, for the Keystone Nexus app
- Desktop
- There is no separate desktop app. On a computer, the Keystone works via QR code or USB with browser extensions such as MetaMask, Rabby and OKX, and with desktop wallets such as Sparrow.
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- 24 words by default, or 12, to write down on the seed phrase sheets. Shamir Backup is also possible: the recovery phrase is then split into several shares (for example 2 of 3). You can manage up to three recovery phrases on one device, each with its own password.
- PIN
- A numeric PIN or a password with letters, numbers and symbols, which you can supplement with up to three fingerprints for unlocking and signing. Forgot your password? After verifying your recovery phrase, you set a new one. If the device is opened, the anti-tamper mechanism erases all sensitive data.
- Passphrase
- Supported. Create it via Device Settings > Wallet Settings > Passphrase and type it on the touchscreen. It is not stored, so you enter it again after every restart (quickly done via 'Passphrase Quick Access' on the lock screen).
- Switching to another wallet
- Possible in any wallet with BIP39. Do watch the derivation path, which can differ between brands: for BTC and ETH it matches Ledger, for other coins not always.

NGRAVE
NGRAVE
1Check authenticity
Check that your NGRAVE is genuine
- On first start-up, the ZERO asks you to scan a QR code on the NGRAVE website.
- Scan that code with the ZERO's camera. This 'cryptographic attestation' proves that the device is genuine and made by NGRAVE.
- Every time the ZERO starts up, it checks the firmware signature itself. If that is not in order, it won't start.
- Does the box look as if it has been opened or damaged? Leave everything as it is, take photos and email [email protected].
- Seal
- The ZERO cannot be opened without visible damage or traces
- What's in the box
- ZERO only: the ZERO, a USB-C cable and manuals. ZERO + GRAPHENE: also a GRAPHENE (top and bottom plate) and a punch pen
2Setup
Official download pagengrave.io/en/liquid
- Software
- NGRAVE LIQUID for iOS and Android
- Phone or computer required?
- You set everything up on the ZERO itself, but on first start-up you use the ZERO to scan a QR code on the NGRAVE website for the authenticity check. For balances and transactions you use the LIQUID app on your phone (or MetaMask or Rabby); for updates you need a computer.
- Mobile
- Android 12 or later; iPhone 6 or later
- Desktop
- No desktop app. Updates are best installed from Windows 10+ or macOS 12; on Linux via the command line. The ZERO also works with the MetaMask and Rabby browser extensions.
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- The NGRAVE Perfect Key: 64 hexadecimal characters, equivalent to 24 words. You record it on the stainless steel GRAPHENE plates (in the bundle or sold separately). You can display the 24 words via Settings > Display secret key. From firmware 1.5, new wallets are only created as a Perfect Key; importing an existing recovery phrase of 12, 15, 18 or 24 words is still possible.
- PIN
- Eight digits on a keypad whose order keeps changing, optionally combined with a fingerprint. After ten wrong PINs the ZERO wipes itself; if you unlock with a fingerprint, you get the option to wipe after five failed attempts. Everything is also wiped if sensors detect that the device is being opened.
- Passphrase
- Supported, via Settings > Passphrase: 1 to 512 characters, case-sensitive, typed on the touchscreen. Each passphrase opens its own hidden wallet and is not stored on the ZERO.
- Switching to another wallet
- Possible: convert the Perfect Key to 24 words (BIP39) and import them into another ZERO or another wallet.

4Updates
- How to install updates
- With NGRAVE's official update tool on a computer (preferably Windows 10+ or macOS 12, or Linux via the command line), while the ZERO is in 'update mode' via USB-C. Only firmware signed by NGRAVE is accepted, and you cannot go back to an older version.

Tangem
Tangem Wallet 2.0
1Check authenticity
Check that your Tangem Wallet 2.0 is genuine
- Download the official Tangem app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and hold the card against the back of your phone. The app automatically checks whether the chip and firmware come from Tangem.
- If you see the 'Create Wallet' screen, the card is genuine and has never been activated before.
- If the app says the wallet is already active even though you haven't done anything, reset the card to factory settings. If the authenticity check fails, don't create a wallet and contact Tangem Support. Send photos of the card and packaging, and mention where you bought the card.
- Seal
- Tangem does not use authenticity stickers; the app tests whether the card is genuine
- What's in the box
- Three Tangem cards (BTC Direct Shop sells sets of three; Tangem itself supplies sets of two or three), a getting-started leaflet and a specification sheet
2Setup
Official download pagetangem.com/enVia the download button on the homepage
- Software
- Tangem app for iOS and Android
- Phone or computer required?
- Yes, you always need a phone with NFC and the Tangem app, including to get started.
- Mobile
- iOS 15.0+ or Android 6.0+ with full NFC support. Does not work on the iPhone 6/6s or the first iPhone SE.
- Desktop
- There is no desktop version; the card only works with the mobile app.
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- No recovery phrase by default. The private key is generated on the chip and copied to 1 or 2 backup cards during setup; you cannot add cards later. You can also create the wallet with a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase (generated in the app) or import an existing recovery phrase.
- PIN
- An access code of your choice: a word, phrase or number, typed in the app. After six wrong attempts you have to wait longer per attempt, increasing by one second up to a maximum of 45 seconds; the card is not wiped. Forgot the code? Reset it in the app with a second card from the set. Biometrics in the app are optional.
- Passphrase
- Limited. Only when importing an existing recovery phrase (12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 words) can you add a passphrase in the app.
- Switching to another wallet
- Only if you created the wallet with a recovery phrase (BIP39). Without a recovery phrase, the key exists only on the cards. Even with a recovery phrase, access in another wallet is not guaranteed.

1Check authenticity
Check that your OneKey Pro is genuine
- Inspect the packaging: the box must not have been opened or resealed, the 'self-destruct' label must be intact and the hologram seal on the device must not have been removed.
- Switch on the wallet. It must be factory-new: no PIN, no recovery phrase and no wallet.
- Pair it with the OneKey App and start the authenticity check: click the account name, choose your hardware wallet and go to 'Edit' > 'Device authentication'; then confirm on the device.
- If 'Verification successful' appears, you have a genuine OneKey device. If a seal is broken or the wallet has already been set up, don't use it and contact OneKey Support.
- Seal

- A 12- or 24-word recovery phrase, which you write down on the three recovery sheets.
- PIN
- Six to fifty digits on the touchscreen, which you can supplement with your fingerprint. After five wrong PINs in a row the wallet is reset. With 'Attach to PIN' (from firmware 4.15.0), a second PIN opens a hidden passphrase wallet directly.
- Passphrase
- Supported. Turn it on on the device via Settings > Wallet > Passphrase; you type it in the OneKey App and confirm on the wallet. Up to 50 characters (ASCII 32-126), and it is not stored anywhere. Each passphrase opens its own hidden wallet.
- Switching to another wallet
- The recovery phrase follows the BIP39 standard.

OneKey Classic 1S
1Check authenticity
Check that your OneKey Classic 1S is genuine
- Seal
- Yes: a 'self-destruct' label on the box and a hologram seal on the device. The shrink wrap (missing on the Classic series from September to November 2025) is only for protection and says nothing about authenticity.
- What's in the box
- OneKey Classic 1S, USB-C cable, three recovery sheets and a sticker
2Setup
Official download pageonekey.so/download
- Software
- OneKey App for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus a Chrome extension
- Phone or computer required?
- Not for setup: you create the recovery phrase offline on the device. For balances, transactions and the authenticity check you use the OneKey App on a phone or computer.
- Mobile

- Desktop
- Windows 10+, macOS 10.11+ and Linux (Ubuntu 12.04+, Fedora 21+, Debian 8)
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- A 12- or 24-word recovery phrase, which you write down on the three recovery sheets.
- PIN
- Six to nine digits, only 1 to 9 (no 0). If you use the app, the wallet shows where the digits are and you tap those positions in the app. After five wrong PINs in a row the wallet is reset. 'Attach to PIN' is available from firmware 3.14.0.
- Passphrase
- Supported. Turn it on on the device via Settings > Security > Passphrase; you type it in the OneKey App and confirm on the wallet. Up to 50 characters (ASCII 32-126), and it is not stored anywhere. Each passphrase opens its own hidden wallet.

Foundation
Passport Prime
1Check authenticity
Check that your Passport Prime is genuine
- Inspect the packaging: the box is closed with a layer of self-adhesive bubble wrap with shrink wrap around it.
- Switch on the Prime, scan the QR code with your phone so that Envoy opens, and connect via QuantumLink.
- During setup, the Prime automatically runs a Security Check: via Envoy, Foundation's validation server tests a key from the secure element.
- If the check fails, the device may have been tampered with or swapped in transit. Then don't use it and email [email protected].
- Seal
- Yes: self-adhesive bubble wrap and shrink wrap around the box. Because customs sometimes opens parcels, the Security Check is at least as important
- What's in the box
- Passport Prime, setup card, three Keycards in Faraday sleeves and a USB-C charging cable
2Setup
Official download pagefoundation.xyz/envoy
Foundation's setup guidedocs.foundation.xyzExtra guide: setup with a manual backupdocs.foundation.xyz
- Software
- Envoy for iOS and Android
- Phone or computer required?
- Yes. You start by scanning a QR code with your phone and then go through everything in the Envoy app (QuantumLink), including the Security Check and the first firmware update.
- Mobile
- iOS and Android via the Envoy app, available from the App Store, Google Play or F-Droid
- Desktop
- Foundation has no desktop app. On a computer you use third-party wallets such as Sparrow, via QR code, USB or a file.
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- Magic Backup by default: the Master Key is split into three shares using Shamir Secret Sharing (two on Keycards via NFC, one encrypted in Envoy and your Apple or Google account), and two shares are enough to recover. If you set up manually, you can also choose 2-of-3 entirely on the Keycards, or write down the BIP39 recovery phrase (also as a SeedQR).
- PIN
- A PIN of 6 to 12 digits or a password with letters and numbers. After ten wrong attempts in a row the Prime erases the Master Key and you restore it from your backup. The device has active tamper protection.
- Passphrase
- Supported, via 'Apply Passphrase' in the Bitcoin Wallet app on the device. The passphrase is not stored and gives a separate wallet; you can use several.
- Switching to another wallet
- Possible: via Settings > Advanced Backups > View Seed Words you see the Master Key as a 'BIP39-compliant' recovery phrase. Conversely, you can import a recovery phrase from another compatible wallet.

ERA
ERA Wallet
1Check authenticity
Check that your ERA Wallet is genuine
- On first start-up, tap START and install the 'ERA Wallet Companion' app using the QR code on the screen.
- Choose VERIFY on the device and 'Start verification' in the app. The app shows a QR code.
- Scan it with the ERA's camera. The secure chip signs the response and the ERA shows a QR code of its own.
- Scan that with the app in turn. If you see 'Authenticity check success', the device is genuine and is activated. You can repeat the check later via Settings > Authenticity Check in the app.
ERA: verify authenticityguide.era-wallet.comBackground on the authenticity checkguide.era-wallet.com
- Seal
- Yes, the box is delivered sealed
- What's in the box
- ERA Wallet, wireless charger (without USB adapter), three ERA Recovery Cards, a paper recovery sheet and a quick start leaflet
2Setup
- Software
- ERA Wallet Companion for iOS and Android
- Phone or computer required?
- Yes. On first start-up you do the authenticity check with the ERA companion app on your phone, and firmware updates also run through the phone (NFC).
- Mobile
- iOS 13.0+ and Android for the companion app; for updates you need a phone with NFC
- Desktop
- No desktop app of its own. On a computer, the ERA works via QR code with Sparrow, Guarda and browser extensions such as Keplr and Suiet, among others.
3Recovery phrase and security
- Backup method
- The recommended option is the ERA Recovery Card: an encrypted NFC backup with its own PIN (three cards included). After 15 wrong PINs the card locks permanently. You can also use a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase on paper, or Shamir shares (20 or 33 words per share, with a threshold of your choice). One device holds up to ten separate wallets, each with its own recovery phrase.
- PIN
- A PIN of 4 to 8 digits or a password of 4 to 256 characters. After five wrong attempts the device resets itself and all wallets are erased. On top of that, you can set a separate wallet password for each wallet.
- Passphrase
- Supported: in the wallet via the settings icon > Passphrase > Create, typed on the touchscreen. When you switch the device off, the passphrase is forgotten; one passphrase per wallet is active at a time.
- Switching to another wallet
- Possible with the paper recovery phrase (12 or 24 words) in another BIP39 wallet. An ERA Recovery Card can only be read by an ERA device.

4Updates
- How to install updates
- Via NFC with the ERA companion app on your phone (battery at least 40%). Before installing, the device checks the signature. Firmware, bootloader and the ERA Lens database each get their own update.
